About Alliance for Scotland's Rainforest
Scattered across the west of Scotland you’ll find a rare woodland called temperate rainforest. These ancient woodlands thrive thanks to the clean air that blows in from the Atlantic, and the wet and relatively mild climate that’s found here all year round. Scotland’s rainforests are very different from other woodlands because of the rich life they contain. Everywhere you look, you’ll see mosses, liverworts, lichens and ferns, mingling and merging and giving these woods a mysterious atmosphere. Some of these species are incredibly rare or found nowhere else. We have an international responsibility to look after the habitats in which they make their home. But our rainforests today are highly fragmented. Only a small portion of what once grew here survives, and many of these areas are in danger. Threats include: - over-grazing by deer - non-native species like Rhododendron ponticum - climate change - air pollution - diseases like ash dieback Despite this, Scotland still has some of the best temperate rainforest in Europe. Protecting, restoring and expanding these woodlands will create more habitat for wildlife, help us combat the climate emergency and biodiversity crises, and allow people to enjoy the magic of these places long into the future. Our partner organisations are working towards the shared aim of rainforest restoration.
