About Ateneo Human Rights Center

The Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC) is a university-based institution that works to promote and protect human rights in the Philippines. Guided by its vision of a just and humane society, AHRC carries out its mission by working closely with communities and partner organizations. As part of the Ateneo Law School, it also helps integrate human rights values into legal education. AHRC focuses on human rights education and training for law students and different sectors of society. It works to protect the rights of marginalized groups, including women, children, migrant workers, and indigenous peoples. AHRC is also involved in research, publications, curriculum development, and advocacy for laws and policies that uphold human rights. In 1996, it became the Secretariat of the Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, which led to the creation of specialized desks such as the Urduja Women’s Desk, the Migrant Workers’ Desk, and the Katutubo Desk. Today, AHRC continues its work through programs such as legal assistance, advocacy, education and training, and institution building. It also takes part in projects that address key human rights issues like peace and development, electoral reform, justice education, and extra-judicial killings.
