AWBF is Tasmania’s largest free event and the Southern Hemisphere’s premier celebration of wooden boats and maritime culture, generating more than 56,000 visitations across four days and attracting interstate and international visitors to Hobart’s historic waterfront. Recognised with Bronze for Major Festivals and Events at the 2025 Australian Tourism Awards and Gold for both Major Festivals & Events and the People’s Choice Award at the 2025 Tasmanian Tourism Awards, the biennial festival spans the entire working port and extends into the city beyond. Founded in 1994, AWBF showcases 400+ wooden vessels from around Australia and overseas — from historic tall ships and classic yachts to traditional fishing boats and working craft — alongside a curated program of maritime culture, craftsmanship and storytelling. Highlights include the iconic Parade of Sail and Admiral’s Sail, on-water displays, cruises and tours, the Wooden Boat Symposium, hands-on workshops, exhibitions, theatre, film, live music at the Festival Tavern, Tasmanian food and drink, and a dedicated kids’ maritime precinct designed to inspire the next generation of maritime enthusiasts.
