About Biochar Earth

Biochar Earth provides durable carbon dioxide removal using coconut shell waste from existing agricultural streams in the Philippines. The pyrolysis process transforms short-cycle biomass carbon into durable carbon storage via biochar which is designed to persist for centuries and longer. With around 3.5 million coconut farmers in the Philippines, coconuts are a strong staple of the local economy that also provides year-round harvests so there's no shortage of feedstock. In many regions, coconut shell waste is managed through open burning or dumped in landfills. Open burning releases black carbon and other harmful air pollutants, while landfill disposal can generate methane as organic material decomposes. By redirecting this waste into our biochar production, Biochar Earth helps replace these higher-impact end-of-life pathways with a managed process that converts waste into durable carbon removal as well as a valuable soil amendment for local farmers in the Global South. All of the supply chain and production work supports the local economy in the Philippines, which keeps more value in Global South supply chains. It also creates demand for agricultural waste that already exists, without incentivizing new harvesting or land-use change.
