About Brahmasthani Awareness Society
Nepal is one of the world's most beautiful countries. But it is also one of the most underdeveloped. The poor population has very limited knowledge of, and access to, vital healthcare. Malnutrition is common. More than one in three children is stunted in growth due to nutritional deficiencies. The poor sanitary conditions also mean that cholera and tuberculosis abound. Care for serious illnesses is costly and all hospitals that provide specialist care are located in the Kathmandu Valley. It means a long and expensive journey for many if they have the opportunity to get there at all. For the poor rural population, who mainly live independently, a common solution is to sell their land in order to afford this life-determining care. Something that in turn creates new problems. Healthcare is partially subsidized for poor citizens, but every third of adult Nepalese can neither read nor write and therefore has very little knowledge of their rights. Patients who nevertheless manage to get to the capital, Kathmandu, face several new challenges there. They must have a companion who takes care of the daily routines: meals, medicines, help with hygiene, etc. The cost of accommodation and subsistence is therefore at least double, and for a self-sufficient Nepalese there is no money for this. Especially since it can be a period of several weeks, sometimes months. The consequence is that the seriously ill are forced to live on the city's streets while waiting for treatment. And many of them give up. They go home again to avoid putting their family in debt, without having received the necessary treatment. Often this results in them never getting well or dying. BAS exists to help these people and give them the chance for a better life. Our primary focus is to help the most vulnerable with healthcare. Through good and long-term collaboration with doctors at the larger hospitals in Kathmandu, they can refer patients without funds to us.
