About Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have established the joint Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine (CEPM) in midtown Manhattan. Building on more than a decade of successful collaboration — which has yielded over $70 million in shared research funding, more than 90% of it from the National Institutes of Health — CEPM leverages the combined strengths of Mount Sinai and RPI in medicine and engineering to accelerate therapeutic innovation, educate future biomedical leaders, and improve patient outcomes. Grounded in the belief that engineering and engineering science are fundamental to understanding biomedical phenomena and advancing therapeutic interventions, CEPM focuses on research and education and the interrelationships between biomedical research and engineering, spanning the molecular to human dimensions. The center is also home to a Ph.D. in Health Sciences Engineering, an innovative, immersive five-year program designed to train future leaders and entrepreneurs working at the interface of engineering and medicine. Combining rigorous coursework in both disciplines with hands-on experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, the program equips students to tackle some of the world’s most pressing health challenges. With access to expert mentorship, real-world projects, and industry partnerships, students learn to identify unmet medical needs, develop cutting-edge technologies, and bring those innovations to market.
