The Luxembourg Fire & Rescue Corps (CGDIS) has been established by the law of 27th of March 2018 organizing the civil security and entered into force on 1st of July 2018. CGDIS is a public-law institution that embraces all public rescue services that existed until then in a single organization. This includes the former civil protection units, the municipal fire brigades, the airport fire service and the emergency medical service. CGDIS is financed by the Government of Luxembourg and the municipalities. The personnel comprises about 500 professional rescue workers, 4000 volunteers and 130 administrative and technical staff. By law, CGDIS prepares, implements and organizes: (a) the relief to persons suffering from vital distress, accidents, calamitous events, disasters and fires; (b) the fire prevention, protection and fire fighting; (c) the fight against pollution by nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical products; (d) the measures to safeguard property, including the environment and cultural heritage, during calamitous events, disasters, accidents, fires and floods; e) the international relief assistance outside the territory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in case of calamitous events; f) the contingency plans for relief at events involving a particular risk; (g) the fire and rescue training; h) the Emergency Medical Service. CGDIS contributes to the evaluation and prevention of technological or natural risks, the management of national crises, as well as emergency relief. It is in charge of operational relations with civil security organizations at cross-border, interregional, European and international level.
