Clara is an AI-powered social agent designed to support group learning processes. Funded by the Nationaal Regieorgaan Onderwijsonderzoek (NRO), the project explores how artificial intelligence can act as a genuine learning partner for students — helping them plan, monitor, and reflect together to improve collaboration and learning outcomes. The research aims to develop and evaluate Clara, a conversational agent capable of engaging with students’ metacognitive and emotional processes in real time. By understanding how groups regulate learning together — known as Socially Shared Regulation of Learning (SSRL) — Clara will scaffold teamwork, enhance reflection, and promote more effective collective learning. The project is conducted by the Eindhoven School of Education (Lerarenopleiding TU/e) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in collaboration with the University of Twente and Maastricht University. Supervisors: Dr. Karolina Doulougeri and Dr. Bert Sadowski (TU/e), Dr. Mohammadreza Farrokhnia (University of Twente), and Dr. S. Kazem Banihashem (Maastricht University).
