About Communication Language & Culture Network (CLCN)

Founded in 2018 by three passionate individuals, the Communication, Language & Culture Network (CLCN) began as a volunteer-led initiative to support culturally and linguistically diverse international students in South Australia. From the very beginning, our vision was clear and powerful: to connect international students with local businesses, creating meaningful pathways to real employment opportunities. Our signature monthly events brought together 100–250 participants, with a unique 50:50 ratio of students to industry professionals. Within just two years, CLCN grew from a team of 3 to 62 volunteers. Then COVID-19 hit. As lockdowns took effect in March 2020, industry placements vanished, graduate programs were paused, and many students, especially international students, found it nearly impossible to secure the placements required for graduation. Many were also experiencing isolation and loneliness. We acted. By May 2020, CLCN had launched online programs to reduce isolation and introduced in-house placements that gave international students the chance to gain academic credit through real-world project experience. With legal support from Cowell Clarke, we formally registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Over the following 10 months, we established formal structures, operating procedures, placement standards, community programs, and volunteer training, all to deliver high-quality, academically recognised placements. Since March 2021, CLCN has supported international students, university graduates, skilled migrants, and young professionals to become more employable by involving them in real-life, community-focused projects. These projects are delivered in collaboration with government agencies, universities, corporates, businesses, industry peak bodies, as well as students, business, and community organisations.
