Deendayal Port is one of the Major Ports in the Country functioning under the administrative control of Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. Prior to 2021, the Port was governed by the Major Ports Act 1964, however after 2021, the Major Port is governed by Major Ports Authorities Act 2021. The Port's journey began in 1931 with construction of RCC Jetty by Maharao Khengarji. The Port of Kandla is located on the Gulf of Kutch on the north-western coast of India, about 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai. Due to the partition of India from Pakistan, India lost its important Port of Karachi and the Port of Kandla was constructed and developed in the 1950s as the chief seaport serving Western India, to ease the congestion of handling the volume of trade on the Port of Mumbai. Deendayal Port's success story has continued and it rose to the No. 1 Port in India in the year 2007-08 and since then retained the No. 1 position for the 16 consecutive years. On 31.03.2016, Deendayal Port created history by handling 100 MMT of cargoes in a year - the first Major Port to achieve the milestone. Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla, the India's busiest Major Port, is gearing up to add substantial cargo handling capacity with private sector participation. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Port handled 127.10 MMT of cargo during 2021-22 and the Port’s cargo handling mark crossed 137.56 MMT during the fiscal 2022-23. DPA is the first Major Port to handle 100+ MMT Cargo for the 9th Consecutive year by handling 131.57 MMT of Cargo throughput in FY 2023-24.
