About Engineers In Action

According to the World Bank: 2.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water; 4.2 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation services (e.g., toilets); 3 billion people lack access to basic hand-washing facilities; and 1 billion people lack access to critical resources like healthcare, education, or employment due to an impassable river. Engineers in Action seeks to alleviate the poverty caused by these issues. We do this by leveraging the resources of our global partners to engage underserved communities and their governments to implement life-changing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects and the bridges needed to access them. This simultaneously provides solutions to poverty and builds local capacity to maintain those solutions for generations to come. Since 2008, EIA has empowered thousands of volunteers from 50+ universities and companies to become global-changemakers by building over 250 WASH and bridge projects alongside underserved communities in 13 countries, connecting over 250,000 people to clean water and other essential resources. In addition to the life-changing projects we help our local stakeholders execute, our volunteers receive the opportunity to meaningfully apply their talents and experience under challenging conditions, taking on key roles in the design and construction of rural infrastructure projects. Beyond gaining skills in technical design and project management, volunteers practice teamwork, leadership, and cross-cultural competency. They grow into better leaders, collaborators, communicators, empathizers, adaptors, and problem-solvers who continue to help build a better world for years to come.
