Kustannustoiminta alkoi vuonna 1968 ja sittemmin Gaudeamuksesta on kehittynyt yksi maamme johtavista tiedekustantamoista, joka palvelee koko suomalaista tiedeyhteisöä ja tieteestä kiinnostunutta laajaa lukijakuntaa.
