About The Himalayan Writing Retreat
Started in 2016, The Himalayan Writing Retreat is amongst India’s favoured destinations for writers, poets and other creators. The retreat is a residential facility located in Satkhol Village near Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand. Some people come here to learn, while others seek solitude to write. It was co-founded by published authors Chetan Mahajan and Vandita Dubey. The Himalayan Writing Retreat offers domestic programs (3-4 days in duration) and International events (usually 10 days long). The domestic courses include poetry, creative writing, non-fiction writing, translation etc. Our faculty members include Arunava Sinha, Arundhathi Subramaniam, Gurcharan Das, Jerry Pinto, Krish Ashok, Ranjit Hoskote, Shekhar Kapur, Varun Grover, Venita Coelho and many others. Many of our Alums have gone on to study writing and film overseas. Chinmayi Sirsi, an HWR participant, was recently accepted into the Iowa Writers Workshop. The Himalayan Writing retreat is also one of the selected partners for the French Residency under the “Villa Swagatam” initiative of the French Institute. Our Charitable initiative the First Draft Club (FDC) supports the Chirag School. Our Book Club is also free – we don’t charge anything. In addition we also run the First Draft Club and offer a residency for emerging writers.
