About HIPSO – Harmonized Indicators for Private Sector Operations
Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) have varied structures and mandates, leading to diverse systems for tracking development results. Different reporting requirements create a burden for shared clients. Efforts to mitigate this began in 2008 and advanced significantly in 2013 when over 20 DFIs formed HIPSO, agreed on definitions for 28 indicators and signed an MOU to adopt these common definitions when using the indicators in their impact frameworks as relevant. Since 2021, HIPSO's catalog has grown to over 150 sector and thematic indicators, reflecting the evolving needs of DFI members. HIPSO has become a key Community of Practice for DFIs, offering a formal platform for sharing knowledge on impact management systems, theories of change, external reporting, data collection, evaluation strategies, and results. It provides DFIs with valuable opportunities to compare notes and understand common challenges. Led by a Steering Group which currently comprises: International Finance Corporation, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, US Development Finance Corporation, British International Investment, and IDB Invest, HIPSO members meet annually in person and interact virtually throughout the year. HIPSO currently comprises 29 DFIs and 6 non-DFI observers, who are impact investors, corporates, and other stakeholders.
