About The Phoenicia Malta

The Phoenicia Malta has stood at the gates of Valletta – Europe’s smallest capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Best City in the World’ – since 1947. Founded by Countess Margaret Strickland, Malta’s first five-star hotel was designed by Scottish architect William Binnie in sweeping Art Deco lines of Maltese limestone. It survived wartime bombing, hosted Princess Elizabeth – later Queen Elizabeth II – as a newlywed and has welcomed guests from across the world for almost 80 years. Today, the hotel honours that heritage as a backdrop to modern luxury. More than seven acres of private landscaped gardens lead to the Bastion Pool, set against Valletta’s towering 16th-century fortification walls. Phoenicia Spa & Wellness – built around a Knights-era fortification wall uncovered during construction – spans 1,200 square metres across two floors. Contessa, the hotel’s landmark restaurant named in honour of its co-founder, serves seasonal Southern Mediterranean cuisine in a botanical garden-inspired conservatory with panoramic views. With 132 rooms and suites, versatile event spaces including the historic Grand Ballroom and a dedicated team known for personalised service, The Phoenicia Malta is a destination for leisure, business and celebrations alike. Forbes four-star rated | MICHELIN Key-holder | Winner of The Leading Hotels of the World’s 2025 Remarkable Experiences Award | Europe’s Leading Landmark Hotel 2025 (World Travel Awards) | LHW Sustainability Leader | GSTC Certified. Malta’s only member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Also affiliated with Virtuoso, Serandipians and Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR).
