Interactive Silicon, Inc. (ISI) was a creator of fabless semiconductor intellectual property (IP). ISI's primary product was the Anvil application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which, when integrated into a DRAM module, increased server performance by 50% or more by compressing DRAM contents in realtime, thereby increasing the effective memory available to applications. ISI was purchased by an the Austin Intellectual Property Acquisition Company, Inc., and was subsequently renamed Quickshift, Inc. Quickshift used ISI's Anvil technology to create a software-only product that offered the same performance increase for servers as ISI's ASIC, but without the need for proprietary DRAM hardware. Precipitous drops in DRAM prices eventually resulted in the sale of Quickshift's patents and other IP to a Venture Capital group.
