About Ministry of Earth Sciences

Formerly the Department of Ocean Development (DOD), the MoES came into being in 2006. Its mandate holistically addresses all five components of the earth system: atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), cryosphere (frozen solid), lithosphere (land) and biosphere (life) and their complex interactions. Its core mission is to provide services for weather, climate, ocean and coastal state, hydrology, seismology, and natural hazards; explore and harness marine living and non-living resources sustainably; and explore the Earth’s poles (Arctic, Antarctic) and the Himalayas.
