The National Craft Museum and Hastkala Academy, located in New Delhi, India, is a cultural institution that focuses on preserving India’s rich heritage of traditional handicrafts and handlooms. Begun in the 1950s with the inspiration of the legendary Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, the Museum Collection currently numbers around 33,000 objects, of which about 3,000 are on display in four galleries: Folk & Tribal Art, Textile, Cultic and Courtly Crafts. Its Village Complex comprises 15 structures such as village dwellings, courtyards, and shrines from different parts of India. Designed by renowned architect Charles Correa, the museum houses a Library, Conservation Laboratory and an Audio & Visual Room. Symbolizing the vintage tradition of Rang-Manch, it also has dedicated open spaces for cultural events and performances. It also hosts craft demonstrations and workshops, exhibitions and education programmes to explore and learn about craft techniques and traditions. Additionally, the complex houses Café Lota, a quaint and artsy café that offers a contemporary take on regional Indian dishes and Lota Shop, which brings together some of the best examples of crafts from all over the country. The museum is located near Pragati Maidan opposite Purana Qila.
