About Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (SIOVS) Hyderabad, Pakistan
Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (SIOVS) was formerly known as Liaquat University Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, Sindh. It has been the only specialized eye hospital in Hyderabad Sindh, widely recognized as “Akhyun Jee Ispatal” (اکين جي اسپتال) or “Aankhon Ka Haspatal” (آنکھوں کا ہسپتال). In 2013, through the tireless efforts of Prof. Dr. Khalid Iqbal Talpur, the hospital was upgraded to postgraduate institute through an Act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. This transformation made SIOVS the only ophthalmic institute in Pakistan established through legislative approval, offering teaching, training, research, and clinical services in ophthalmology while delivering state-of-the-art patient care. Today, SIOVS plays a leading role in the prevention and control of blindness in Pakistan. Since, December 2022, the Executive Director has been designated as the National Coordinator for Prevention and Control of Blindness by the Ministry of National Health Services, Islamabad. As a result, SIOVS is now responsible for National and Provincial coordination in Sindh to combat and prevent blindness.
