Sparse long-term, low-cost monitoring: Passive-Active Reservoir monitoring using Seismic, Electromagnetics, gravity and surface deformation ✳️ BACKGROUND: A major challenge for large scale CO2 storage operations is the cost associated with the required geophysical monitoring during the operative phase and after the injection has ended. ✳️ OBJECTIVE The aim of SPARSE is to develop a low-cost monitoring system to assure containment and conformance, consisting of node-based multi-physics geophysical monitoring and automatic conformance evaluation. ✳️ IMPACT: The project will develop a concept and principle design for SPARSE low-cost and long-term CO2 monitoring. This will help enabling large-scale (Gt) storage by reducing cost, facilitate monitoring of large storage complexes with multiple injection wells, potential legacy infrastructure, or heavy ship traffic that would make conventional monitoring difficult. ❇️ PARTICIPANTS: SINTEF, Norway Vår Energy, Norway Quad Geometrics, Norway Carbon Management Canada (CMC) University of Calgary, Canada Q-Eye Labs, Canada GeoSoftware, Canada Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory (LBNL), USA ❇️ The SPARSE project is funded through the ACT programme, Grant number 340953.
