Despite significant advances in cancer treatment, many therapies remain limited because the dose needed to effectively kill cancer cells is too close to the amount that is toxic for healthy tissues. Side effects such as severe to life-threatening neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, gastrointestinal issues, fatigue, and increased risk of blood clots often leads to dose reductions and discontinuation. As a result, patients may not be able to stay on therapy long enough to achieve the full benefit. Starton successfully conducted a Phase 1b study in relapsed/refractory MM patients, which resulted in all enrolled patients achieving an objective response (1CR and 5PRs). No patients experienced drug-related anemia, neutropenia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia greater than grade 2 in up to 12 cycles of therapy. Starton aims to make STAR-LLD more effective and tolerable for patients, replacing and expanding the use of Revlimid. The company is also investigating the use of STAR-LLD in combination with T-cell engager and CAR-T cell therapies for the treatment of lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
