About Symmetry Wood

Symmetry Wood is a biomaterials manufacturer combating forest destruction by creating high-performance, petroleum-free alternatives to precious woods like ebony, rosewood and mahogany, which drive wasteful high-grade logging in the tropics. Symmetry’s patent-pending product, Pyrus™, is made from upcycled food waste, exceeds the hardness of maple and oak, and resembles precious woods in appearance. The core ingredient of our material is bacterial cellulose (BC), which is generated as SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast) waste from the kombucha industry. It can also be fermented from various other kinds of waste, including agriculture residue and even textile mill runoff. While there are other companies, such as Polybion, Modern Synthesis, and Kombucha Biomaterials, using BC for leather and paper production, Symmetry is the first to ever make solid wood from it. Cellulose has always been one of the core components of tree-derived wood. In fact, it is the most common polymer in nature. There are several reasons that Symmetry is choosing to grow cellulose with bacteria instead of trees. (1) BC grows much more rapidly than plant cellulose, (2) BC possesses enhanced mechanical strength that can translate to a wooden material, and (3) BC grows in a purer state that lends better to customized material creation. Instead of cutting and wasting an excessive number of trees, which could stay in place to provide local economic and environmental benefits, Symmetry gives its customers a way to more efficiently tune wood to various applications.
