About The Indian Society of Criminology
Indian Society of Criminology (ISC), established in 1970, is a pioneering national professional body dedicated to advancing the study and application of criminology and allied sciences for the welfare of society. Headquartered at the Department of Criminology, University of Madras, Chennai, the Society was founded to promote cooperation among professionals engaged in crime prevention and control. Recognising that crime prevention is a shared societal responsibility, ISC was conceived as a voluntary, multidisciplinary platform bringing together criminologists, sociologists, psychologists, judges, lawyers, police officers, correctional and probation officials, forensic scientists, social workers, academicians, and criminal justice practitioners from across India and abroad. The Society was initiated by eminent professionals including Hon’ble Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer (Founder Honorary President), Prof. T. E. Shanmugam (Founder Chairman), Mr. N. Pitchandi, Prof. K. Chockalingam, Mr. K. Mani, and Mr. P. Paramaguru, IPS, and was later strengthened by the contributions of several distinguished scholars and practitioners nationwide. ISC pursues its objectives through annual national conferences, symposia, training programmes, public lectures, research projects, and awareness initiatives on contemporary crime issues, cybercrime, forensic science, public safety, criminal justice reforms, and rehabilitation. The Society has successfully organised 45 All India Criminology Conferences and publishes the Indian Journal of Criminology (UGC-listed). ISC also confers prestigious awards and fellowships recognising outstanding contributions to criminology and criminal justice. Through research, education, and professional engagement, ISC continues to strengthen evidence-based approaches to crime prevention and social well-being.
