About TRANSMISSION COMPANY OF NIGERIA
As part of Nigeria’s broader power sector reforms in the early 2000s, the Federal Government, under the leadership of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, sought to address the nation’s growing electricity demand and the inefficiencies of the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA). This led to the enactment of the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act in 2005. Following the enactment of the EPSR Act in 2005, NEPA was unbundled into 18 successor companies, including six Generation Companies (GENCOs), eleven Distribution Companies (DISCOs), and one Transmission Company (TCN). These companies operated under the transitional Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), which was later dissolved as reforms progressed. TCN was incorporated in November 2005 as a public liability company under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA). In 2006, TCN was issued a transmission licence by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which was later split in 2013 into two separate licences: one for Transmission Service Provision (TSP) and another for Independent System Operation (ISO). Under these licences, TCN was responsible for grid development and maintenance as well as system and market operations for Nigeria’s power sector. However, with the enactment of the Electricity Act, 2023, and pursuant to NERC Order No. NERC/2024/45, the Nigerian electricity market has undergone further restructuring. The Act mandates the separation of system and market operation functions from TCN into a distinct, independent entity in order to promote transparency, efficiency, and market confidence. This led to the incorporation of the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited (NISO) as a private company limited by shares under the directive of NERC. TCN, in its current role as a Transmission Service Provider, is focused on strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, expanding grid capacity, and reducing transmission losses.
