About Tribe Martial Arts Foundation
Founded in 2019, by Norman 'Chef' Wessels and Richard Quan, TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation creates sustainable solutions for women and youth in impoverished areas facing gender-based violence, domestic abuse, and with limited opportunities. At TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation, we believe in the transformative power of martial arts to create real and lasting change. As a youth- and women-focused non-profit organisation, we use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as a tool for trauma-informed self-defence, leadership, and personal development. Our programmes combine physical empowerment with education, mentorship, and accredited instructor training; equipping participants with life skills, confidence, and pathways to employment or entrepreneurship. We’ve partnered with a registered education provider to offer academic support from Grade 6 to Matric, ensuring a holistic approach that integrates body, mind, and opportunity. Through strategic partnerships, we aim to grow martial arts as a sport and sustainable career path while uplifting communities across South Africa. We are passionate about creating safe spaces, building resilience, and unlocking potential; one student, one academy, and one community at a time.
