Today, it is recognized as an exclave of the emirate of Sharjah, positioned strategically between Oman and the emirate of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman coast. The town is adjacent to the notable Khor Kalba, an ecologically significant mangrove reserve on the Omani border. The town's growth reached a significant milestone in 2023 with the establishment of Kalba University. Founded by an Emiri Decree from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the institution was conceived as a non-profit with a focus on innovative education, research, and community service. Though initially a branch of the University of Sharjah, it soon became an independent entity under the new title of University of Kalba.
