About University of Victoria Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR)

University of Victoria Centre for Aerospace Research (UVic CfAR) has become a Canadian leader in Unmanned Air Systems research, design, integration and testing. Since it's formation, UVic CfAR has provided services for major aerospace companies as well as supporting smaller Canadian businesses as they prepare to enter this fast growing market. In Canada, these companies include Bombardier Aerospace, Meggitt Training Systems Canada, Bombardier Aerospace, Rigid Robotics, Terra Remote Sensing, Brican Flight Systems. Internationally, UVIC CfAR has been collaborating with Boeing (USA) and EMBRAER (Brazil). UVic CfAR’s objectives and key activities involves: ADVANCEMENT IN UNMANNED SYSTEMS–This includes the investigation of unique concepts such as Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), Rotary Wing, Blended Wing Body and Joined Wing configurations. Development of these new concepts is critical in introducing UAVs to a wider range of applications and new markets. A focus will be placed on evaluating/developing technologies for improving aircraft range, fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. One of the largest challenges with UAVs, launch and recovery methods, will be investigated and developed. DEVELOPMENT OF APPLICATION OF SPECIFIC UAV PAYLOADS–Many industrial partners are ready to work with us in developing custom payloads for remote sensing, precision agriculture and search and rescue for integration into UAV airframes. CERTIFICATION OF UAVs– CfAR intends on developing infrastructure for certification of aircraft based on new Transport Canada regulations. Also, we will create processes, technologies and best practices to bring UAV’s up to the level of safety and reliability of manned aircraft. This will also include other developments such as ground based radar for tracking small aircraft, long range comms and collision avoidance systems.
