Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) is one of the twelve working major ports of India. It was constructed in the year 1933 and was opened on 7th October, 1933 with the arrival of Passenger vessel m.v S.S. JALADURGA. The shape of the coastline and the presence of natural barriers, such as rocky formations, help shield the harbour from the full force of ocean waves and currents. VPA offers a range of services related to maritime trade, cargo handling, and logistics. The port has container terminals where containers are loaded, unloaded, stored, and transferred between different modes of transport, such as ships and trucks. The port is well-connected to rail and road networks, facilitating the transportation of cargo to various destinations. The Visakhapatnam port consists of two harbours: • Inner Harbour – 23 berths • Outer Harbour – 8 berths Inner Harbour The Inner Harbour is in a water area of about 100 hectares. It has three different arms, namely, northern arm, western arm and the north western arm. The northern arm is used as the main commercial arm with 20 berths. The western arm has 3 berths. The north western arm is fully occupied by the Indian Navy. The Inner Harbour itself is capable of handling BabyCape vessels of draft up to 14.5 meters. Outer Harbour The Outer Harbour is protected by a set of breakwaters on the eastern, southern and northern sides. It is spread among 200 hectares. Outer Harbour has 8 berths and a Single Point Mooring (SPM) and has unique distinction of handling super cape vessels of 2 DWT which is having a draft up to 18.10 meters. VPA also has the deepest container terminal among all the Major Ports of India with permissible of 15.5 meters which can handle Main Line Vessels of 390 meters LOA. This infrastructure enhances the port's capacity to handle diverse types of cargo and vessels. They contribute to the economic growth of the region by facilitating trade, supporting industries, and generating employment opportunities.
