About WAJAMAMA Zanzibar
WAJAMAMA is a women-led, locally rooted nonprofit strengthening reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child healthcare in Zanzibar, with a model designed for adaptation across sub-Saharan Africa. In Zanzibar, preventable complications continue to claim the lives of newborns each week, while women face a far greater risk of dying during pregnancy or childbirth than women in higher-income countries. Our work responds to the health system constraints behind these outcomes, including overstretched facilities, limited provider capacity, fragmented care, and insufficient mental health support. At the centre of our approach is the Group Care Model, an evidence-based model that brings women together throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period to receive comprehensive clinical care, health education, mental health support, and peer connection. By combining respectful, trauma-informed care with stronger continuity, early risk identification, and community support, the model improves the quality and experience of care for women while enabling healthcare providers to serve more families effectively. WAJAMAMA is now working with the Zanzibar Ministry of Health, the State University of Zanzibar, Georgetown University, and the University of Global Health Equity to integrate the Group Care Model into the public health system. Our goal is to develop a cost-effective, practical, and scalable approach that can be sustained by government and adapted by other countries facing similar maternal and newborn health challenges.
