About Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics
ABOUT HOME Founded in 2004, HOME is a charity (with IPC status) dedicated to assisting foreign workers who suffer abuse and exploitation. Migrant workers (about 1.2 million of them) play a vital role in contributing to Singapore. They take on low-waged jobs such as domestic workers and are also hired in the construction, marine, manufacturing, service and conservancy sectors. Their work is often dangerous and precarious. We assist migrant workers who suffer abuse and exploitation. Unpaid salaries, excessive working hours, work injuries, physical and psychological abuse are some of the common problems these workers face. Some of them may also be victims of human trafficking. In order to provide immediate crisis intervention and long-term support, we run a domestic workers’ shelter and helpdesks for domestic workers and male migrant workers. In 2015 alone, over 2,000 migrant workers received assistance from us. We also offer legal assistance, health education and vocational training to them. We believe in empowering migrant workers through education and skills training, and about 1,800 domestic workers graduate from our HOME Academy each year. We have invested time, resources and effort at HOME Academy to upgrade the quality of our teaching materials and standard of the trainers. With the assistance of International Labour Organisation, we have also devised a Financial Planning course to teach migrant workers on income and financial management. HOME works with government agencies, civic groups, corporations and other community partners to realise our vision in creating an inclusive society that stands for justice, fairness and equality.
