The Mona Ghassemi Research Group at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) focuses on high-voltage engineering, electrical insulation systems, plasma science, and power-system innovation. Our central research theme is dielectrics and electrical insulation—one of the four fundamental pillars of electrical components, alongside conductors, semiconductors, and magnetic materials. Our research spans a broad range of applications: from dielectrics and insulation in semiconductors and 3D heterogeneous microsystems, to advanced packaging of (ultra)wide-bandgap ((U)WBG) devices and power modules, to packaging for power electronics building blocks, and to line insulators in ultra- and extra-high-voltage transmission systems. In essence, we investigate every application where high voltage, plasma activity, and compact design converge, giving rise to enhanced electric-field stress, charge transport phenomena, and complex insulation challenges. We also address high-power, high-density systems, where thermal management is as critical as electrical insulation. Furthermore, our work extends to harsh environments—including low pressure, radiation, high humidity, and high temperature—where plasma formation and insulation degradation can threaten reliability and longevity.
